Library staff fill many roles to serve the community

By Larissa Lehman, Camrose Canadian Contributor

When you enter the Camrose Public Library, you will be greeted by our friendly and outgoing front desk staff. We welcome patrons of all ages and backgrounds and want your experience at the library to be a positive one. If you have any questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to ask us. Our goal is to provide you with exceptional customer service each and every day.

You might think that all we do at the front desk is check in and out books/movies then just sit around waiting for the next patron to arrive. That is not the case. We are proficient multitaskers! We make new library memberships, help patrons find their next book, request books/movies for patrons, process more than 30 bins of materials delivered from other libraries each week, download eBooks, invigilate exams, distribute taxi tokens, help patrons with the information they need on the computer, sort through donated books/movies, purchase and process new material, and answer thousands of interesting phone calls we receive each year.

The staff that work the front desk carry out many different services:

New library memberships — Memberships are free for City of Camrose residents and $12/year for Camrose County families. If you prefer to register for your own library card from the comfort of your home, you can visit: http://cpl.prl.ab.ca, go to the service tab on our website, and click on “Get a Library Card!” It will be ready for you by the next business day.

Request books and movies: If you do not find the book or movie you are looking for on our shelves, don’t worry. We will gladly request it for you from another library.

Sharing resources: When you have a library card in Alberta, you can borrow items from any other library in Alberta. The Camrose Public Library receives more than 20,000 items from other libraries for you each year, and sends out about the same number to other libraries around the province.

Holds: All the requested items from other libraries you made will be placed on the shelf by the front door of the library. They are all sorted by your last name and the last four digits of your library card barcode. You have seven days to pick up your request.

Downloading eBooks and other electronic resources: The library website is your portal to thousands of electronic resources such as eBooks, audiobooks, newspapers, movies, and music. We are happy to lend you a hand.

The Library has many great services and programs to check out this winter, hope to see you soon.

Library Hours:

The library is open Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. The library is closed all weekend days of statutory holidays.

Larissa Lehman is known for her red hair and blue eyes, which is rare. She is also left-handed which is a very rare combination (less than one per cent of the world population has red hair and blue eyes, roughly 10 per cent are left-handed). She has worked at the library for the past 12 months. She always has a smile on her face and a willingness to help others.
