We flock to games to support our kids, our teams and our genuine love of the sport. But no one comes to a field or arena without the anticipation of great game snacks.

If you’ve been to a hockey game in the past 17 years in Camrose, you’ve likely consumed a lot of delicious snacks, and you’ve had the privilege to meet Fin and Lorrie, the owners of Flo(Fin and Lorrie Olesen)’s concession. You’ll find them at the ball diamonds all summer and at the main and Border concessions in the Recreation Centre. This couple works tirelessly for citizens and visitors at every hockey game, tournament or curling special event.

Fin and Lorrie Olesen were both born and raised in Camrose and have been married 43 years! They raised their family here and have been owning/managing local businesses in this community since 1980. According to Fin, “The people in Camrose have been very supportive,” and they have a lot of regulars who over the years have become good friends. Their daughter Cindy now manages the concession and they can now proudly say even a few grandkids have helped out behind the counter.

It’s about the food, it’s definitely about the food, but according to Cindy it’s about much more then the food. She says in the summer they have customers who come not for the ball game but for the food and to see their favorite cooks.

No hockey game at our local Encana arena would be the same without our favourite popcorn, nachos, burgers and fries. People flock to the concession at intermission, and waiting in line a new culture is created. This is where community meets, in the food line waiting for a hot burger while chatting the last minute of game play.

You’ll notice a few exciting changes to their fall menu, which includes some healthier options. You can still stop in for game nachos, but this fall they’ve become nachos supreme and come stacked with extras like onions and ground beef, they’re not just tacos and cheese anymore! You can get fresh fruit and veggies, wraps, energy bars, slushies, coffee, hot chocolate, and don’t forget the mochas. Expect homemade muffins, made from scratch by avid baker Lorrie Olesen, that are low fat and low sugar and fill the gap, especially for those who just hopped off the team bus after a long drive from another community.

Cindy hears from families all the time that are happy to be back in Camrose for tournaments because we have the best French fries. What’s the secret ingredient? Believe it or not, they really did share it with me….their fries are REAL POTATOES. Skins on and everything. Yum. Served nice ‘n’ hot! You can even order them as our Canadian favourite: poutine.

Stop by the concession and say hello, while supporting this dynamic local family run business! Their hours of operation are Monday-Thursday from 4-8 p.m., Fridays 4-10 p.m., Saturdays 8 a.m.-10 p.m. and Sundays 8 a.m.-8 p.m. These are the set hours, but be aware the schedule changes as game schedules change. Breakfast, lunch and supper are all ready to serve!

If you can’t get enough of their food and would like to book Flo’s to cater your next business lunch, workshop or family gathering, contact Cindy at (780)678-4309.
