Slo-pitch adds clubs 0
The Camrose Mixed Slo-pitch League (CMSP) started play in its sixth year of existence. The league was formed in 2004 with only eight teams playing in one division. In 2005, the CMSP League expanded to 10 teams and then to 14 teams in 2006. In 2007 the CMSP League expanded to 18 teams and for the first year, it seeded the teams in three different divisions.
The popularity of mixed slo-pitch continued to grow as the CMSP League expanded to 24 teams, playing within four divisions in 2008. This year, another four teams were added to the league along with a fifth division.
With the growth of the CMSP League, a new problem rose as diamond availability became a major concern. In order to accommodate all the teams, the CMSP League made a decision to play some of their scheduled games in Ohaton. With the Ohaton diamond being secured, the CMSP League was able to accommodate all 28 teams that wanted to play in 2009. The CMSP League further formed a Diamond Feasibility Committee and will be partnering with other diamond users within the City of Camrose to explore options for future years as the number of individuals using the diamonds continues to grow.
In 2009, the 28 teams will play all the teams within their division during the first half of the season. The divisions will then be reseeded and the teams will play each other again to determine playoff positioning. The CMSP League playoffs will take place from July 16 to 18 in a tournament format. The winners of each division during the playoffs will move up to the next division in 2010.
Presently the Geo's Warriors are the de-fending CMSP League champions. The Geo's Warriors have been league champions for five consecutive years; however, expect a strong challenge again from the other five "A" division teams. The Warriors, along with the Prairie Gnomes, Mixed Veggies, Havoc, Isotopes, Max Steele and Sociables are some of the original teams. The CMSP League standings, scores and news can be found on their web site at www.cmspl.letpad.com and to obtain further information about the league contact Rick Marcinkowski (CMSP president) at 780-608-5000.
